Emails, error messages, and alerts

Microcopy in GenAI Summaries app

In 2024, the Account Success AI & Automation team developed a GenAI account summarization app for Customer Success Managers to use. I was responsible for the UI and content design in Figma. This included a range of messages, empty states, and alerts, some of which are pictured below:

Error messages

While uploading a photo to a recipe on Allrecipes.com, I noticed the error message needed a little improvement.

The feedback I gave was:

  • The red exclamation mark symbol and background communicate an error state; starting with “Error submitting” is redundant.

  • “Please submit a smaller photo” is more specific than “Please try again.” It is also consistent with the other error message about photo dimensions (below).

  • The second error message is missing a period at the end of the second sentence.

My feedback was implemented in the following sprint. The error messages are now consistent in phrasing and appear with correct punctuation.

If the submitter’s photo doesn’t meet the criteria, that’s when the error message can specifically request “a smaller photo” or “a larger photo,” so they would know what to do next.
